Investing In Agriculture: Start small,Grow big, Fact or Fiction?

Agribusiness is a game of number;
the more/bigger you cultivate,the better you get out of it.
You can’t compare the revenue of someone who cultivate one acre of land with 100
or more acres or
some who rears 10 livestocks with 1000 animals; all things being equal.
Start small and grow big;
the question is how small can i start and how big can i grow?
Are there yardstick for measuring how small one should start
or how big one should grow?
The proponent of this advice believe
that if you start small(maybe some plots or start with small number of livestock),
you can make some mistake ,learn and grow steadily.
You will hear something like
“start with a plot of land at your backyard,learn the inside out and grow big after that”.
Do you know the challenges and experience you will be faced with
as a farmer on a small scale will be different from
when you expand and grow big?
It is a different ball game when you grow big.
The level of management when you farm 50,000 birds
will be different when you have about 50 birds at your backyard.
It means that starting small does not guarantee your success at the end day.
You can start small and make the mistake that will kill the business
and not be able to recover from it thereby stiffening growth.
Do you also know that there are some
business in agriculture that starting small will require hundred of millions?
If I am starting the business with such amount,
will you say that I am starting big and might hit the rock?
My advice has always been;
Do not start anything that you don’t yet develop the capacity to do.
In anything you want to do,to be successful,you need first the Knowledge
What do you know?Do you have mentor that will hold you by the hand and take you through the cycles.
If you want to cultivate maize or rear livestock,
do you have someone that will take you through the cycle of rearing
from the beginning to the marketable size?
When you know you have the capacity to handle that amount
you have capacity for in knowledge terms,then you can start from there.
Never start any agribusiness that is beyond your
capacity(knowledge and experience wise),
not necessarily starting according to your pocket size.
If you want to grow bigger,
first of all find a mentor that can increase your capacity in that area of growth before making any attempt to grow big.
